Raised in Tasmania, Rolf was drawn to spending as much time as possible outdoors. This combined with a mechanical aptitude for repairing anything mechanical, a passion for all types of optics, photography, and the chemistry of the dark room, naturally led to an interest in large format photography and especially wet plate collodion with its old age quality and difference to modern film process.
